Coastal Sensorialities

Taking sounds and movement as their departure point, these projects remind us of the unique sensorial experiences of islands and how, in the absence of mechanical sounds, we adopt quieter rhythms and shape pleasant living spaces.

Rhythms of the Inter-Island

Otto Heim, Celestial天上, The Gong Strikes One

'Rhythms of the Inter-Island' is designed to draw visitors’ and residents’ attention to often overlooked qualities and dimensions of the relationships that characterize and distinguish life on the islands, by making them accessible to auditory experience, enjoyment, and reflection.

The project creates and presents music composed and performed in response to sounds and voices heard and overheard near the sea, to explore and appreciate the vibrancy, fragility, and resilience of the inter-island environment that sustains the culture and identity of islanders.

The project consists of an assemblage of sound installations and live performances of music in selected outdoor spaces in two locations: Mui Wo and Peng Chau. The most prominent features will be compositions and performances by Celestial 天上, The Gong Strikes One. The performances will be supported by a surrounding sound installation created by HKU students from recordings collected on various island locations or from sound-producing constructions. Visitors and residents may thus be guided into the Festival space by following sounds and unexpectedly find themselves as audience to an ongoing performance.
